Idea Cellular, a major global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile services operator and an Aditya Birla group company, plans to expand its footprint to five more mobile circles to cover the whole of India and deepen its rural penetration, a top company official said. At present, the company has commercial operations in 17 out of 22 mobile service circles in the country, and over 47 million subscribers.
"By the end of December 2009, we will cover West Bengal, Assam, the northeast and Jammu and Kashmir to become pan-India," Rajat Mukarji, chief corporate affairs officer, Idea Cellular, said. He said the company had an outlay of Rs 6,000 crore last year for the pan-India growth, and that Idea has invested in expanding its footprint in Mumbai, Bihar, Chennai and Orissa.
The company's major competitors are Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, and BSNL. Mukarji said last month, the company had launched a pilot project called Nokia Life Tools in rural Maharashtra to provide farmers a range of agri-related news in the local Marathi language.
